North Bass Island (Isle St. George)

North Bass Island, also known as Isle St. George) is the least developed of Ohio's Lake Erie islands. It’s the closest island to the Canadian border, and most of it is made up of North Bass Island State Park. This island has been preserved largely in its natural state, with only a small community living on the island.

Visitors come to North Bass for fishing, hiking and quiet getaways from private boat slips for rent. The island is accessible primarily by boat or plane, making it an off-the-beaten-path destination.

Located between North Bass Island and South Bass, Middle Bass Island offers a more peaceful atmosphere compared to its neighboring islands. It’s famous for the Lonz Winery, a historic winery that’s now part of Middle Bass Island State Park.

Boating, fishing and birdwatching are popular activities. The state park offers beautiful camping spots. Middle Bass is often a retreat for those looking to escape the more commercialized Put-in-Bay.

Perhaps the most well-known of Ohio’s islands, South Bass Island is home to the village of Put-in-Bay, often called the "Key West of the North." Located to the south of Middle Bass Island, it’s a popular destination for boating, fishing and nightlife.

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial, a towering monument, commemorates the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812 and celebrates lasting peace between the U.S., Canada and Britain. The island also has caves, like Perry's Cave, and a state park offering camping, hiking and stunning views of the lake.

The most easterly of the Erie Islands, Kelleys Island is larger and quieter than South Bass. It’s known for its laid-back charm and natural wonders. The island is a haven for nature lovers, with opportunities for hiking, biking and birdwatching.

One of its key attractions is the Glacial Grooves, an impressive natural formation carved by glaciers during the last Ice Age. Kelleys Island is also home to vineyards and offers more relaxed tourism, with sandy beaches, nature preserves and historical sites.

Other Smaller Islands

Other smaller islands, such as Rattlesnake Island (a private island with limited access), Ballast Island and Green Island, are part of the Lake Erie island chain but are mostly private or uninhabited. These islands offer a more secluded experience, often for private owners or members of exclusive clubs.

Access to Lake Erie Islands

Most of these Lake Erie islands are accessible by ferry services, small aircraft or private boats from a marina or private boat lift rental. The Jet Express and Miller Ferry offer regular services to South Bass and Kelleys Island. Smaller ferries service Middle Bass Island.

Always follow cleaning and maintenance steps to avoid transporting Invasive species on your boat or trailer back to a private boat slip rental.
