Cambridge, Maryland, one of the oldest colonial cities in the state, offers a memorable blend of history, nature, culture, and Chesapeake charm. Nestled along the Choptank River, south of St. Michaels, this inviting waterfront town is rich with attractions, art galleries, boutique shops and seafood restaurants that highlight its maritime heritage and scenic beauty.

Outdoor lovers can enjoy kayaking, fishing or a sunset cruise on the Choptank River. One of the crown jewels of Cambridge is the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center. It’s located just outside Cambridge in Church Creek. The LEED Silver–certified, 15,000-square-foot facility immerses visitors in Tubman’s world and life story through interactive exhibits, a short film, a research library and a museum store.

Opened in March 2017, it sits on a 17-acre state park adjacent to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The center’s design guides guests from dark, low-ceilinged galleries into brighter, open spaces—symbolizing Tubman’s journey north to freedom. Outdoor trails and a memorial garden encourage reflection on her courageous legacy.

Searching for outdoor recreation from a private boat lift rental or marina? Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge offers more than 3,000 acres of marshes, forests and wetlands that’s perfect for hiking, photography and birdwatching. Founded in 1933 to protect migratory waterfowl on the Atlantic Flyway, it now supports a diverse array of species, including bald eagles, Delmarva fox squirrels and hundreds of bird species.

Its marshes also provide vital storm protection for Dorchester County. Visitors can explore five miles of hiking trails, 17 miles of paddling trails and a 3.6-mile Wildlife Drive ideal for spotting bald eagles.

Choptank River Lighthouse

Don’t miss the Choptank River Lighthouse, a replica of the historic screw-pile lighthouse that once stood offshore. It sits atop the municipal marina and provides panoramic views and insight into the region’s maritime past. It’s a terrific spot to visit from a marina or a  boat slip for rent near me.

Originally built in 1871, the first structure was destroyed by winter ice in 1918. A second lighthouse, which was relocated from Virginia’s Cherrystone Bar, operated there until 1964. The current replica, completed in 2012, sits at the end of Pier A in Long Wharf Park. Visitors can explore a mini museum and exhibits about the region’s maritime heritage.

Whether you come to Cambridge for the heritage, the wildlife, the waterfront atmosphere or a private boat slip for rent, Cambridge offers the perfect blend of relaxation and discovery. It’s an Eastern Shore destination with a heart as wide as its river views.
