Beyond fishing and boating, Mitchell’s Bay is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The nearby St. Clair National Wildlife Area (NWA) provides wetland habitats for a diverse range of bird species, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife observation and photography. You just might spot Eastern spiny softshell and Blanding’s turtles. There is a 2.7-mile out-and-back trail, which is generally considered an easy route.

The NWA is home to more than 220 species of birds, including several at-risk species such as the black tern, the least bittern and the king rail. This area is recognized as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and is part of the Eastern Lake St. Clair Important Bird Area. It serves as a critical stopover for migratory waterfowl. Hundreds of thousands of birds, including a significant portion of the eastern population of tundra swans, pass through during spring and fall migrations.
