A highlight of Rockaway Beach is, naturally, the beach itself. This stretch of sand spans several miles, offering plenty of space to relax, sunbathe, swim and surf. It’s the only beach in the New York metropolitan area where surfing is permitted.

There are multiple rules about surfing in Rockaway Beach, so it’s a good idea to check them out before hitting the waves. Surf-friendly areas include Beach 67th Street and Beach 92nd Street.

Extending for more than five miles, the Rockaway Beach Boardwalk is an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll, jog or bike ride. The boardwalk is home to scenic views, food vendors and public art installations, murals and sculptures. Grab a bite to eat, check out seasonal events and experience the local beach culture before heading back to a boat slip rental or marina.

Fort Tilden

Part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, Fort Tilden offers a more secluded beach experience and a mix of historical and natural attractions. This former military base now serves as a peaceful retreat, with unpaved trails, hidden art installations and stunning panoramic views from the abandoned gun batteries.

The beach here is quieter and popular for locals looking for solitude and nature. Make sure to check out Battery Harris East, where you can climb the steps for sweeping views of Jamaica Bay, New York Harbor and the Manhattan skyline.

Jacob Riis Park

Jacob Riis Park, located a bit farther down the peninsula, is known for its art deco 1930s bathhouse, spacious beaches and stunning sunset views. During the summer, Riis Park Beach Bazaar hosts food vendors and live music events, creating a lively atmosphere that’s great for families and groups. It’s a wonderful place to wind down your day and catch a sunset over the Atlantic.

The Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA) offers art exhibitions, performances and educational programs for visitors of all ages. The alliance’s gallery and studios are located in a former military chapel, giving the space a unique charm. They showcase local art and host events throughout the year, making it a great spot for art enthusiasts to visit from private boat dock rentals.
