Kerid Crater
Selfoss is a popular spot to base yourself if you’re interested in exploring the Golden Circle, which includes Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, Kerid Crater, Gullfoss Waterfall and the Blue Lagoon, as well as several other sites along a 186-mile trail.
Kerid Crater is a caldera (created when a magma chamber empties and collapses) with a walkable rim and vibrant red volcanic rock. At about 180 feet deep, it’s believed to be approximately 3,000 years old. If you’re feeling energetic, take a walk down to the edge of the water.
Bobby Fischer Center and Grave
Visit the Bobby Fischer Center and Grave, a museum dedicated to chess legend Bobby Fischer. It features his memorabilia and serves as an exhibition space for the local chess club. Pay respects at his gravesite in Laugardælir Cemetery, which is located just a couple of kilometers from town.
