City Guides: Things to do While Boating on Cat Island, Bahamas

Situated southeast of Eleuthera and north of Long Island, Cat Island is one of the most beautiful islands in the Bahamas. It’s known for its pristine pink beaches, crystal-clear water, cultural history and sailing regattas. Named after the pirate Arthur Catt (sadly, not an actual cat), Cat Island is 48 miles long and about four miles wide. Also known as Como Hill, Mount Alvernia is the highest point on Cat Island. Climbing to the top of Mount Alvernia is a challenging but rewarding experience. The hike is steep, but the panoramic views of the island from the top are worth the effort. The trail is well-marked and takes around 20-30 minutes to reach the summit.

The Hermitage, located on Mount Alvernia, is a small whitewashed stone building at the top of the mountain. It’s a stunning spot to take in island views. The Medieval-inspired Hermitage was built as a monastery in the 1940s by Father Jerome, a Catholic priest who was known for his reclusive lifestyle. He lived in the Hermitage for more than 20 years until his death in 1956. Today, the Hermitage is a popular destination for travelers who come to admire its architecture and enjoy panoramic views.
