Barbados, situated east of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (and part of the Windward Islands), may be best known for its beaches and rum, but scattered across the island are four historic lighthouses that once guided sailors through treacherous waters. Each has its own character, history and scenic backdrop, making them well worth a stop on your island adventures, whether you’re cruising out from a private boat slip rental or off on a charter cruise.

Built in 1852, South Point Lighthouse is located in Oistins in Christ Church. It was imported from London after being showcased at the Great Exhibition. This red and white cast-iron tower is the oldest lighthouse in Barbados. It still operates today and offers a picturesque backdrop for photos near the lively fishing town of Oistins.

2. Ragged Point Lighthouse

Situated on high cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, Ragged Point Lighthouse offers sweeping panoramas and a sense of isolation. The waves crashing against the rocks below make it one of the most dramatic sightseeing spots on the island. Built in 1875, it’s located in St. Philip at the easternmost tip of the island.

3. Needham’s Point Lighthouse

Though partially obscured by the Hilton Resort, the coral stone Needham’s Point Lighthouse is a fascinating piece of Barbados’s history. Its location near the capital makes it an easy stop for history lovers exploring Bridgetown and Carlisle Bay. It was built in 1855 and makes an excellent day trip from a private boat dock for rent in Barbados.

4. Harrison Point Lighthouse

Harrison Point Lighthouse, built in 1925, is located on the northern tip of the island in St. Lucy. The tall steel tower once guided ships around the rugged north coast. Though decommissioned, it remains an imposing landmark to see while cruising out from private boat slip rentals. Adventurous visitors can trek the nearby coastline for panoramic ocean views and a taste of solitude.
