With the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop, Colorado’s lakes provide a stunning setting for all types of boating fun whether it be sailing, motorboating, paddleboarding or kayaking. Popular destinations like Lake Dillon, Grand Lake and Blue Mesa Reservoir cater to a range of activities that include fishing, swimming and sightseeing.

Many lakes, such as Horsetooth Reservoir and Chatfield Reservoir, are equipped with marinas, boat rentals and picnic areas, making them perfect for day trips or weekend getaways from private boat docks for rent. Anglers also flock to spots like Pueblo Reservoir for world-class fishing. Meanwhile, quieter lakes like Shadow Mountain Lake or Navajo Reservoir are ideal for serene exploration and wildlife viewing.

1. Lake Dillon

Located in the Rockies, Lake Dillon (sometimes called Dillon Reservoir) offers stunning mountain views and a well-maintained marina. It’s perfect for sailboats, motorboats and kayaks. Rentals are available, and the high elevation makes for cool and refreshing summer boating. Nearby towns like Frisco and Dillon provide dining, shopping and entertainment.

2. Grand Lake

Near Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake is Colorado’s largest and deepest natural lake. It’s an excellent choice for motorboating, water skiing and paddleboarding. The quaint lakeside town adds charm, and the proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park makes it a scenic getaway. The lake is accessible year-round, with winter snowmobiling and ice fishing adding to the fun.

3. Blue Mesa Reservoir

Colorado’s largest artificial reservoir located completely within the state, Blue Mesa offers more than 96 miles of shoreline for powerboating, sailing and fishing. The calm waters make it a favorite for houseboats and longer trips.Located in Gunnison County, it’s part of Curecanti National Recreation Area and offers excellent camping, hiking and wildlife viewing. There are also a couple of marinas on the lake.

4. Horsetooth Reservoir

Horsetooth Reservoir is a popular spot for wakeboarding, tubing and jet skiing. Its proximity to Fort Collins makes it a convenient day trip for locals and travelers to check out from private boat slip rentals. The surrounding trails and rock formations provide excellent hiking and climbing opportunities.

5. Chatfield Reservoir

Located within Chatfield State Park in Littleton, Chatfield Reservoir is a convenient boating destination for Denver residents. It’s a hub for recreational activities, including motorboating, sailing and paddleboarding. The park offers extensive amenities, including camping, picnic areas and a marina with rentals.

6. Pueblo Reservoir (Lake Pueblo)

With warm waters and ample space, Lake Pueblo is perfect for speedboats, fishing boats and personal watercraft. The Pueblo County lake is a favorite among anglers for its abundant fish species. The surrounding state park features 60 miles of shoreline, great for camping, hiking and getting away from it all.

7. Navajo Reservoir

Located in Southwestern Colorado and extending into New Mexico, the 34-mile-long Navajo Reservoir is a massive lake that offers a quieter boating experience with lots of room to explore. It’s great for houseboats, sailing and fishing. Since it spans two states, you’ll find diverse scenery and a variety of coves and inlets to discover.

8. Shadow Mountain Lake

Shadow Mountain Lake, located between Grand Lake and Lake Granby, offers a peaceful atmosphere and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Connected to Grand Lake by a canal, it provides additional boating opportunities with equally spectacular views. It’s ideal for smaller boats, canoes and paddleboards heading out from a marina or private boat lifts for rent.
