Lake Life: 6 New Mexico Lakes for Boating Fun

The rugged landscape and dry deserts of New Mexico don’t normally come to mind when thinking about boating destinations. The Land of Enchantment, however, offers several beautiful lakes that are ideal for boating enthusiasts. Whether you’re looking for high-altitude reservoirs surrounded by pine forests or expansive lakes in the arid southwest, here's a guide to some of the best lakes for boating in the desert.
1. Elephant Butte Lake

The largest lake in New Mexico, Elephant Butte Lake is the premier boating destination in New Mexico. With more than 36,000 acres of water when full, it offers plenty of space for recreational boaters, sailors, watersports enthusiasts and anglers. Located in southern New Mexico near Truth or Consequences, the area offers several marinas and boat ramps as well as camping and RV hookups. It's also home to the annual Elephant Butte Balloon Regatta and other popular water events.
2. Navajo Lake

Navajo Lake, the second-largest in the state, has deep blue waters that stretch across canyon country and provide a peaceful and scenic setting for boating. It's particularly popular for sailing and houseboating vacations, and it offers great trout and bass fishing. There’s a well-equipped marina and boat rentals. Situated in the Northwestern part of the state near Farmington, the lake is shared with Colorado, making it convenient to several marinas or private boat slips for rent.
3. Heron Lake

Heron Lake is a tranquil, no-wake lake ideal for those seeking a calm, quiet and scenic boating experience. Sailors and paddlers love it for its consistent winds and calm waters. It's also a designated "quiet lake," which makes it great for wildlife viewing and relaxing on the water. Located within Heron Lake State Park, in Northern New Mexico near Chama, the lake is perfect for kayaking, canoeing and sailing. You’ll find access to the Continental Divide Trail and hiking trails with a background of forests, hills and wildlife.
4. Conchas Lake

Conchas Lake is known for its beautiful waters and sandy beaches. It has excellent conditions for high-speed boating, jet skiing and watersports like waterskiing and wakeboarding. With 60 miles of shoreline, there's plenty of room to explore, fish or simply enjoy the open water. Situated in Northeastern New Mexico, there are two marinas and several boat ramps.
5. Ute Lake

Ute Lake, in Eastern New Mexico near Logan, is less crowded than some of the larger lakes but offers just as much in terms of boating fun. It’s especially favored by locals for its smooth water and long narrow shape, which makes it ideal for skiing and tubing. This calm and remote lake offers excellent fishing and camping facilities.
6. Brantley Lake
Though located in a more arid part of the state, Brantley Lake is a refreshing stop for boaters exploring southeastern New Mexico. It’s a great place to fish or take a relaxing cruise to or from private boat lift rentals under wide-open skies. Close to Carlsbad Caverns National Park, this desert lake is popular for fishing and offers plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities.
