Mold and Mildew Prevention Aboard a Boat

Mold and mildew are common problems on boats, particularly those that are moored or docked in humid areas or at private boat slip rentals with a lot of rain. These types of environments create the perfect conditions for mold and mildew to grow. Not only is it unsightly and damage-inducing, it can cause health problems for people with allergies or respiratory issues.

We all know that the biggest cause of mold and mildew anywhere is excess water and moisture. And where do boats spend most of their time? Outdoors and in the water where humidity, condensation and water can all work together to wreak aquatic havoc.  So, the question is, what do we do? To prevent mold and mildew from taking hold of your boat - whether it’s kept at home, in a marina or at a private boat dock for rent -  there are several steps you can take.

The first step in mold and mildew prevention on a boat is to keep it clean and dry. Since moisture is the primary cause, it's important to keep your boat as dry as possible. After using your boat, be sure to dry it off completely. Pay particular attention to areas that tend to collect water or are prone to dampness, such as the bilge, head and galley, and any areas around the hatches or ports. If you're in an area with a lot of rain or humidity, consider using a dehumidifier to help remove excess moisture from the air.

Another step is to ensure that the boat is well-ventilated. Good ventilation will help to keep the air flowing and reduce the amount of moisture that can build up in the cabin. Open the windows and hatches to let in fresh air. Consider installing a vent fan to help circulate the air. If you have a heater or air conditioner on board, make sure it's properly vented to the outside to prevent moisture from building up inside the boat.

In addition to keeping your boat clean and dry, whether with a washdown system or your own elbow grease,  it's important to take steps to prevent mold and mildew from growing in the first place. One way to do this is to use products specifically designed to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew, such as sprays, wipes and coatings.

Another effective mold prevention method is to use natural remedies like vinegar or tea tree oil. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant and can help to kill mold and mildew spores. Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray the affected area. Let it sit for a few hours before wiping it down with a clean cloth. This is an easy task to accomplish at home or at a private boat dock for rent.

Tea tree oil is effective at killing mold and mildew spores. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with water in a spray bottle and spray the affected area. Let it sit for a few hours before wiping it down with a clean cloth.

Quick Tips for Mold and Mildew Prevention

  • Find leaks and seal them (areas to inspect  include windows, cleats, hatches, windlasses, bow rollers, etc…)
  • Cleanliness is next to Godliness (use that vinegar and water solution to keep everything clean and dry)
  • Reduce humidity with dehumidifiers
  • Install ventilation such as dorade or cowl vents or even solar fans
  • Use a boat cover if stored outdoors or at a private boat lift for rent (check often for pooled water on the cover)

We hope this has helped with any concerns you may have about preventing or getting rid of mold and mildew. A little bit of elbow grease at the marina, dock or private boat slip rental can go a long way in keeping mold at bay.
