From the time you leave your marina or private boat slip rental to the time you cruise back in, your key concern is safety on the water. National Safe Boating Week, a campaign developed by the National Safe Boating Council, is observed from May 17 to May 23, 2025, just in time for the unofficial start to summer and boating fun on Memorial Day weekend.

This nationwide campaign is aimed at promoting boating safety and preventing accidents on the water. Whether you're a seasoned boater or just getting started, there are many ways to participate and help spread awareness about safe boating practices.

Here are some meaningful ways to get involved and stay safe.

1. Wear Your Life Jacket and Spread Awareness

Kick off the week by participating in Wear Your Life Jacket Day on May 17. Take a photo wearing your life jacket and share it on social media using the hashtag #WearYourLifeJacketDay to encourage others to always wear a properly fitted life jacket while out on the water whether you’re in a boat or on a jet ski

2. Get a Free Vessel Safety Check

Ensure your boat is safe and ready for the season by scheduling a free vessel safety check (VSC) from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary or U.S. Power Squadrons. These inspections won’t result in a violation or ticket if your boat doesn’t pass. They help identify potential safety hazards and ensure you have all the required equipment on board, such as life jackets, proper ventilation, fire extinguishers, flares, registration and more.

You’ll receive a decal for your boat that states you're in compliance. If you happen to get randomly stopped by on-water police, you’ll be glad you have this decal on your boat.

3. Take a Boating Safety Course

Education is key to responsible boating. Sign up for a boating safety course online or in person to refresh your knowledge on navigation rules, emergency preparedness and local regulations. Many states offer incentives, such as insurance discounts, for completing a certified course.

You can check out free online boating safety information and videos at BoatonCourse.com. This site allows you to watch videos and then test your knowledge at the end.

4. Review and Update Your Float Plan

Before heading out on the water, always file a float plan with a trusted friend or family member. This document includes your travel route, expected return time and emergency contacts, ensuring that authorities can assist you if necessary.

5. Check Weather and Prepare for Emergencies

Weather conditions can change quickly, making it crucial to monitor marine forecasts before heading out from your private boat lift rental or a local marina. Also, ensure you have an emergency kit on board that includes first aid supplies, flares and a marine radio.

6. Promote Responsible Boating

Avoid drinking alcohol while operating a boat, as impaired boating can be just as dangerous as impaired driving. Before you leave the private boat dock rental, marina or your driveway, designate a sober skipper to keep everyone safe. Additionally, encourage eco-friendly boating practices by properly disposing of waste, recycling fishing lines and being mindful of marine life and invasive species.

7. Participate in Local Events

Many communities, marinas and boating organizations host safety demonstrations, rescue drills and educational workshops throughout the week. Attend an event or volunteer to help spread awareness in your local boating community and private boat lift rental neighborhood.

8. Share Boating Safety Tips Online

Use your social media platforms to share boating safety reminders, checklists and personal stories about safe boating experiences. The more people engage with these messages, the wider the impact of National Safe Boating Week.
