Old Harbor serves as the island’s lively gateway, where ferries arrive amid marinas and Victorian-era inns. The harbor area is ideal for strolling between shops, seafood restaurants and waterfront docks. Visitors often begin their exploration here before heading out to beaches, trails or scenic drives around the island.

Covering much of the island’s northern coastline, the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge protects important migratory bird habitats and fragile coastal ecosystems. Visitors can explore trails winding through dunes, grasslands and maritime shrublands. During migration seasons, the refuge becomes a prime destination for birding enthusiasts.

Towering clay cliffs rising nearly 150 feet above the Atlantic Ocean make Mohegan Bluffs one of Block Island’s most iconic natural landmarks to visit from private boat dock rentals. A long wooden staircase descends from the bluff top to a quiet beach below, where waves crash against dramatic rock formations. The panoramic ocean views from the top are especially striking at sunrise and sunset.

Near the edge of the bluffs, the Southeast Lighthouse has guided mariners since 1875. The brick Gothic Revival structure remains one of the island’s most photographed landmarks. Inside, exhibits detail Block Island’s maritime history, while the grounds share sweeping Atlantic views that stretch far beyond the coastline and private boat lift rentals.

The beach’s gentle slope and nearby amenities make it popular for swimming, sunbathing and long shoreline walks. During summer, beachgoers can rent umbrellas, bicycles and mopeds nearby.

North Lighthouse, at the northern tip of the island, overlooks windswept dunes and the sandy shoreline of Cow Cove. Reached by a scenic walk through the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge, the lighthouse area attracts birdwatchers, photographers and travelers seeking quieter scenery away from the busier harbor district and private boat slips for rent near me.
