Located on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg, the 12th largest freshwater lake in the world, Grand Beach is known for its sandy shoreline, dunes, and forests. Beyond the beach itself, visitors can explore trails, wetlands, historic landmarks and nearby natural areas, all about an hour north of Winnipeg.

Grand Beach extends for roughly 1.5 miles along Lake Winnipeg and is backed by grass-covered sand dunes that rise as high as 39 feet. The fine silica sand and relatively shallow shoreline have made Grand Beach a popular summer destination since the early 20th century. Swimming, sunbathing, boating and other water activities are popular activities to do from a private boat lift rental. Visitors should be aware that Lake Winnipeg can experience strong winds and changing water conditions.

The Grand Beach Boardwalk provides an easy way to explore the waterfront. Interpretive signs along the route highlight the area's history as a railway-era resort, when trains brought visitors from Winnipeg to the beach. The resort developed during the early 20th century and became associated with attractions such as a dance hall and carousel. The boardwalk also has access to seasonal food and recreational activities.

Ancient Beach Trail

The Ancient Beach Trail offers a look at the geological history behind the Grand Beach landscape. The self-guided trail follows part of an ancient shoreline associated with glacial Lake Agassiz, which once covered much of the region. Today, forests and other vegetation have reclaimed the former beach environment. The trail is one of several hiking opportunities within the provincial park and provides a change of scenery from the lakeshore and private boat docks for rent.

Away from the open shoreline, and private boat slips near me for rent, the Grand Beach Marsh Preserve is an important habitat for birds and other wildlife. The lagoon and marsh environments are particularly appealing for birdwatching, with visitors potentially seeing a variety of waterfowl and other species. The area is also associated with the endangered piping plover, a small shorebird that nests in habitats along Grand Beach.

Grand Beach Provincial Park includes distinct East Beach and West Beach areas separated by a channel connecting the lake and lagoon. The two areas offer different perspectives on the park's shoreline and provide additional opportunities for walking, photography and enjoying the landscape. The channel has strong currents and is not a swimming area. A footbridge provides a safe way to cross between the beaches.

A self-guided route within Grand Beach Provincial Park, the Spirit Rock Trail provides opportunities to experience the area's forest and glacial landscape. The trail includes views toward Lake Winnipeg and features large glacial boulders left behind as the ice sheets retreated. The park's broader trail network has routes through jack pine forest, wetlands and other habitats.
